So what is PDS & how can it impact on Performance & Culture?

Here is an interview that was recorded by Cleveland Indians discussing my collaboration with them.

It turned out to be a great conversation sharing what PDS actually is & who it is for.

I also talk about the critical elements that support both coaches & athletes through the

‘transition of change’ which ensures the new principles are embedded.

This can be applied to any sport at any level -

PDS also provides the “influencer” with “check” tools to know if long term learning & understanding is being achieved throughout the planning, delivery & review phases of development.

Traditional coaching challenges –

  • Athletes often struggle to transfer teaching/coaching in practice to games/competitions

  • Athletes rely on coaches for motivation

  • The same athletes answer questions/engage & the same athletes stay quite in the back ground

  • Athletes struggle to remember learning from one session to the next

  • Athletes rely on coaches to advise them on what is working & what they need to adjust in both tactical & technical

  • Difficulty maintaining engagement in mixed ability & mixed commitment groups

  • Coaches are effective with some athletes & struggle to positively impact others

  • Session content is high on tactical & technical which many athletes struggle to remember

  • Percentage of coaches talking compared to athletes is high

  • Minimal or no evidence based strategies/audit of coach self-awareness of ‘state’ & effectiveness of decision making in both practice & competition environments

  • Limited or no ongoing coach support to maximise peak performance

  • Often personality driven strategies with no sustainability or consistency

“Knowing how to coach is easy; there are plenty of people who can talk great coaching. But to get to a level where you are living it day in day out takes a true desire to pursue excellence, self-awareness, discipline, unbiased effective support & an environment where being vulnerable isn’t seen as a weakness; its embraced as a strength”

PDS  'Need centred' approach -

  • Increased athlete engagement

  • Athletes self-managing & effectively supporting/challenging peers without common conflict issues

  • Athletes become more effective in relevant & meaningful dialogue with peers & coaches

  • Athletes become effective at accepting feedback from peers & coaches

  • Athletes ‘scanning’ live, making effective choices & committing to them under varied pressure

  • Athletes Self reviewing & concluding live; adapting where required

  • Increasing effectiveness working with mixed ability groups

  • Increased players long term learning with understanding

  • Auditory evidence of learning & decision making competencies within varied pressures

  • Ongoing coach support

  • Robust scalable coaching principles & support systems to sustain & embed effective cultures

There are several ways to get PDS support. PDS is based In UK, but works with clients all over the world.

  • Online support – this can be provided on its own or in conjunction with live support

  • Training courses – a range of courses to suit your needs

  • Live support – bespoke live support for individuals or whole teams and organisations

  • Keynote Speaker - from 2 to 6 hour deliveries. Often integrated within conferences and CPD days

This site provides a guide to all these services, but we can discuss bespoke requirements for yourself, your team or organisation

There are two key elements within the Performance Development Systems (PDS) –

  1. DEVELOPING BETTER INFLUENCERS -Training, coaching & mentoring ‘influencers’ to increase their ability to maximise the behaviours & performance of the individuals & teams they are working with

  2. SUPPORTING CHANGE - Provide effective support, structures & principles to positively impact people ‘change’ in order to embed the newly acquired skills, competencies & behaviours

Either of these delivered in separation will not truly impact any team or organisation. Technical & tactical training is important, but if a coach struggles to influence some individuals & teams to consistently make effective decisions, execute them with quality & intensity within competition environments; those individuals & teams will always under perform.

Even if the training is of high quality in providing information on how to increase individuals & teams behaviours, learning & performance. The chance of someone being able to go away & embed the new learning into their own coaching; to be able to adjust their own behaviours to embed new ones is very slim. Most people will regress back to their pre training habits within a few weeks. This is why having a robust support intervention to help coaches through the ‘transition of change’ is not only critical; it ensures you receive a tangible return on your investment.

We know that the coaches & managers have a huge influence on cultures, environments & performance, in both practice environments & in competition. PDS increases coaches & managers ability to influence teams & athletes within these environments.
